Installing an hardwood floor can be done in four main ways : nailing down, stapling, glueing and floating.

First, nailing the floor is the most used way of them all. A « L » shaped nail is inserted oblicly in the wood piece on the top part of the male part using a wood flooring hammer. Little teeth on the nail unables it to get out of the wood. As it does a single pressure point, the wood can still move in its natural way and that avoids earing unwanted noises.

Second installation type is a lot alike nailing except that staples are used instead of nails. At the opposite of nails, staples don’t have teeths and do two pressure points. The wood is not as easily able to move in a natural way, which may result in earing noises.

Third way is mostly used with engineered flooring. It takes its name from the two glue layers used to install the floor. Specifically, one layer of glue is found between the concrete and the soundproofing membrane and a second one is found between the membrane and the wood itself. This installation type is safe and durable but expensive.

The last installation type is relatively new and is also used with engineered flooring. When using the floating installation, a glue is also used, except that the glue is found between the pieces, on the male part. The floor is, in that situation, not attached to the subfloor or concrete in any way. Floating hardwood floors are ecological because the glue is not toxic, and because, to install the floor, you need less glue than in the glued floors. Also, this type a lot less expensive.
